Most of the cars standing in Merriam on a given afternoon are not Merriam's — I-35 runs through the middle and the store on the interchange draws people from well outside it. Yours is collected free either way, and reshaped on the factory paint fourteen miles south.

Merriam is a small town that a very large amount of the metro drives through. Eleven thousand people live here; I-35 cuts the city in half, Shawnee Mission Parkway crosses it, Johnson Drive and Antioch run through the middle, and the IKEA sits on the interchange drawing carloads from a long way outside Johnson County.

The arithmetic of that is unusual. A retail destination on an interstate exit can hold more vehicles on a Saturday than the town has households, and none of them are local. So when a cell tracks across the interchange, it dents a car park full of people from Topeka and St Joseph and the far side of the river, who drive home wondering whose problem it is.

The town underneath all that traffic is old, small and quiet — South Park, East Merriam and the older streets — with the lot sizes and the garages of the era it was built in. Two completely different exposures sharing a postcode.

A town people drive through

Whose cars are actually parked in Merriam?

On a weekend afternoon, mostly other people's — which makes this one of the few towns on the map where the hail damage and the residents are only loosely related.

The store on the interchange is the obvious one. A destination of that kind pulls people off I-35 from well beyond the county for a couple of hours at a time, and parks all of them outdoors on one rectangle beside the motorway. Merriam Town Center adds more of the same on the other side. There is no equivalent anywhere else on this map: a town of eleven thousand with a car park that regularly holds a serious fraction of that number in vehicles belonging to strangers.

The interstate itself is the second half. I-35 does not skirt Merriam, it goes through it, and Shawnee Mission Parkway crosses on top. That means a permanent supply of cars stopped at lights, sitting on frontage, waiting to turn — stationary in the open, briefly, in enormous numbers.

Then there is the actual town, which almost nobody driving through ever sees. South Park and the streets off Johnson Drive are old inner-ring Johnson County: modest lots, garages sized for one car, households that now have two or three. The overflow lives on the drive and takes every storm of the season. Antioch Park puts some green in the middle of it.

This page carries no storm date for Merriam. Our verified record is metro-level and putting a specific cell on a specific interchange would be an invention. What your panels show under the board is the hail history your claim runs on.

If your car was dented here but lives somewhere else in the metro, we collect it from wherever it actually parks rather than from the lot it was standing in. The dent does not belong to the town it was acquired in — which in Merriam is more often true than not.

Kansas rules

Can I claim against the shop I was parked at?

No, and nobody can — which saves a great many people in this particular car park a wasted afternoon every season.

Hail is a no-fault weather event under your own comprehensive coverage. A retailer does not insure the roof of your car against the sky, a car park operator does not either, and there is no one to pursue. You claim on your own policy, wherever you were standing when it happened and wherever you happen to live.

Kansas then keeps damage that is merely exterior and cosmetic, from windstorm or hail, out of the salvage calculation, drawing the total-loss line at 75% of a late-model vehicle's fair market value with the carve-out sitting in front of it. That is the rule for a Merriam car and for a car that drove in from Topeka — what decides it is where the vehicle is registered, not where the storm was.

Kansas law leaves “merely exterior cosmetic damage… as a result of windstorm or hail” out of the salvage calculation, so a cosmetically hail-dented vehicle generally shouldn’t be branded a total loss on that basis alone.

Kansas sets the total-loss line at 75% of a late-model vehicle’s fair market value — but the cosmetic-hail carve-out above sits in front of it.

You choose the shop. Your insurer can’t force you to use a specific shop or make you travel unreasonably to one. They can recommend a shop — but the choice of who repairs your car is yours. (K.A.R. 40-1-34 under K.S.A. 40-2404(9))

The statute and the detail: Kansas hail damage laws. If the car is registered in Missouri, Missouri hail damage laws is the one that applies to it.

This is general information, not legal advice — what applies to you depends on your policy and your carrier.

What happens to the panel

Every panel goes under a line board, every dent gets found and circled, then each is worked back to shape from behind — or lifted from the outside with a glue tab where there is no access. No filler, no primer, no respray, and the finish the factory applied stays exactly where it is.

The method in full is on the paintless dent repair page. If a shop has quoted you filler and paint, paintless dent repair vs a body shop sets the two side by side.

Getting the car to us

Fourteen miles — and if I do not live here?

Then we come to wherever you do. Merriam is twenty minutes from the bay, but the collection follows the car rather than the storm.

For Merriam residents it is a driveway pickup and a free loaner, or a drop-off if you would rather — twenty minutes down I-35 and back, at no charge. For everybody who was only visiting, the same offer applies from wherever the car actually sleeps, as long as that is inside the sixty miles we cover.

The reason to use a fixed shop in a county this well served is the year after. Hail summers bring crews into Johnson County who work from a rented lot and are gone by autumn, warranty and all. Ours is written down and attached to a building on E Kansas City Road that has been there for years.

Where your car goes from here

Which one is it?

Resident or visitor, these are the four.

A newer truck or EV

Aluminum takes smaller corrections and carries a labor factor on the estimate. A per-panel question, not a badge.

A car that lives on the drive

Old Johnson County garages hold one car and households have three. The overflow takes every storm of the season.

Living in Olathe, I've used Hail Solutions twice now for hail damage. Both times the paintless dent repair was fast, flawless, and much cheaper than body shops.

Straight answers

The questions we get every day.

Some of these have answers we can't promise, because they're decisions your insurer or a third-party database makes, not us. Where that's true, we say so.

My car was dented in the car park at the store. Can I claim against them?

No, and nobody can. Hail is a no-fault weather event — a retailer does not insure your roof against the sky and no car park operator anywhere does. It goes on your own comprehensive coverage exactly as it would if the car had been on your drive. It is the single most common wasted phone call this town produces.

I do not live in Merriam. Do you still collect?

Yes, from wherever the car actually lives, as long as that is inside the sixty miles we cover. The dent does not belong to the town it was acquired in. If your car is registered in Missouri, Missouri's rules apply to it rather than Kansas's — the registration decides, not the storm.

Could hail total my car in Kansas?

Kansas leaves damage that is merely exterior and cosmetic — the kind hail causes — out of the salvage calculation, and draws the total-loss line at 75% of a late-model vehicle's fair market value. The carve-out sits in front of that number. The practical risk is a careless estimate rather than the law.

Do you pick up in Merriam, or should I drop it off?

Whichever suits. Fourteen miles and about twenty minutes down I-35, so plenty of people here drop off and stay for the first part of the inspection. Pickup, the loaner and delivery are free if you would rather not make the trip.

Will the repair show up when I sell?

No. Each dent is reshaped rather than filled and resprayed, so the factory paint and the original panels stay on the car. No body-shop record is created, so a vehicle history report has nothing to flag.
